Thoughts Effect Reality: The Proof is in the Rice Pudding

Perhaps, you've heard about the famous Emeto experiment featured in the What the Bleep Do we Know Now movie series? Dr.Masaru Emeto subjected water to different mesesages of emotions: participants were asked to think and send messages to ordinary tap water, such as hate, love, thank you, gratitude, then Dr. Emeto photographed the water chrystals that formed in the water receiving the message. The results were truly magical: positive emotions and messages transformed the water chrystals into beautiful designs, and the negative emotions had an effect of creating  an ugly, chaotic, disorganized mess.

What is even more interesting and miracolous, that water also appears to respond to mere words, not intentions in the same way, and this is something that you can observe, and prove or disprove for yourself, without the need of expensive or ellaborate equipment. The proof is in the pudding, rice pudding that is.

Well, not pudding, exactly, just ordinary, cooked rice. Cook a pot of rice, divide it into three containers (to avoid contamination, the best is to use brand new, never used containers) and seal the container with the kind of tape you can write on. Next, write positive words on one of the containers: "Thank You, I Love You, You are Beautiful" are some of the examples. Write hateful, negative words on the next container:"I hate you", "You Fool", "You are Ugly" and others like that. You can write just one message, or several. On the third contaner, write nothing at all. This will be the container that will be simply ignored: it will receive neither bad or good attention.

Now, store the three containers at room temperature for a minimum of one month, and up to three months. If your experiment goes anything like the tens of thousands of experiments conducted (and reported) by people all over the word, you will see a result something like this: the rice that was marked (subjected to) positive messages, even without thoughts or attentions, will show some signs of "going bad", but will look remarkably good even after three months of storage. The container with the "bad" messages will not do as good: chances are, there will be a lot more signs of rot and mold than in the first container. Interestingly, but not surprisingly, the third, ignored and neglected container usually does the worse. As one observant, but not entirely scientific observer remarked, the rice, after 141 days in the ignored container looked like a bowel movement. (He actually used the "S" word).

Rice absorbes water while being cooked, and apparently, the water in the cooked rice responds to the words even without intention. Conclusion? Words and thoughts might not break your bone literally, but at the cellular level, they can make or break your body, and ingorance, neglect, inattention and indifference is the worst form of abuse a person can inflict on others, on their selves, on the environment, and everything contained within. Food for thoughts, isn't?

I Think, Therefore My Mind Exists

To honor Descartes, the sixteenth century French mathematician, scientist and philosopher, who coined the famous statement “I think, therefore I am” (Cogito ergo sum), the Mind-Body question (that is, whether mind and body are separate entities and if one can exist without the other) has been named after him as the “Cartesian Dilemma”.

Descartes was the first to contest, that the mind is a non physical substance. Consciousness, and self awareness, he argued exists separately from intelligence, which he believed was a faculty of the brain. In his view, a person does not ‘exist’ without self awareness and conscience: our thinking process, our mind creates the self and simultaneously an awareness of this self.

Our mind is more than a computing machine, a “ghost in the machine” that keeps the body running, and our existence existing. Our Self, that is the Entity known as “I”, is much more than the sum of our thoughts, yet it is constantly being created and re-created by our thoughts, emotions and feelings.

To demonstrate what our mind is or is not, I like to use the somewhat cliché computer-human analogue. Like the computer, we have a physical body (although according to ancient knowledge and modern quantum physicians, even the “realness” of objects is questionable, and all living and nonliving entities are nothing but a manifestation incredibly high frequency vibrations of light). Even though the computer already has a fully operational operating system programmed on its hard drive, and our body has a similar program contained in the DNA, neither the computer nor or body is “alive” and operational, before the electricity, or the Life Force is turned on. If there is no Power, there is no Life and there is no Internet. (wow…life without internet, contemplate THAT!)

The computer’s keyboard, mouse, touch screen, camera and other gadgets serve as “sensory system”, a way to gather input from the environment to process. The stimuli or “input” is transmitted through a mind bogglingly complex nervous system in a code that is much similar to a computer program: electronic impulses and chemical changes that signal the presence of changes in the environment inside or outside: changes in temperature, smell, touch, and so on.

These sensory inputs are decoded and interpreted by the brain, via further electronic currents and chemical changes into “meaning” by our perception. For example, there are a number of dots on your computer screen, (based on the resolution, there can be a LOT of dots), some of them lit, others aren’t, and these dots are formed into patterns of color and shape. These “dots” don’t really exist, they are just changes in light and vibration. Certain cells in the eye that are designed (by WHOM?!!!) to do exactly that, sense these changes, transmit them to the brain as electrical impulses where by employing further electrical and chemical changes, they are decoded, and perceived to be “letters”.

We recognize the letters, and provided we know how to read, provided we understand the language they are written in, we form words, sentences, paragraphs and make meaning of the dots on the screen. These words then might evoke emotions, memories, feelings that create further chemical and electrical changes that are interpreted using a code that is written in certain chemical and electrical changes and activate a “program” that is written in a code of electrical and chemical changes that will be transmitted to different parts of the body via electrical and chemical changes that will be interpreted by cells using chemical changes and electrical currents and activate actions or reactions that will result in electrical and chemical changes that the brain will sense through chemical and electrical changes……and so it goes. I am already brain dead from contemplating this.

Lets try an exercise. Consider this pattern of dots first, then close your eyes, and contemplate what the dots “mean”. Pay attention to your thoughts, to your Mind minding the dots…go ahead, start contemplating now.

LEMON

Your sensory system detected a certain pattern of light and transmitted this pattern to your brain, where it was deciphered to mean a yellow fruit, with sour taste. Not only did you read the word LEMON, but you created an “image” or construct of the fruit as you know it in your mind. It has also created associations, some strictly biological, recall of the taste, texture, smell of the lemon, and the all so famous Pavlovian reflex of increased saliva just at the thought of lemon. There might have been other associations, depending on whether you like or dislike lemon. You might have thought of having some tea with lemon, or a nice, cold bottle of Corona, with a wedge of lemon in it. This might have brought up memories of that perfect vacation in Mexico last year, the sight of beach, the weather, the sun, the breeze, the awfully cute bartender with the great body, the night the bartender was off duty….But perhaps you HATE lemon, because when you were a child, and were sick, you were always made to drink chamomile tea with lemon, and you associate being sick with the taste of lemon. Or perhaps, you resent the memory of being forced to drink the god awful concoction and you resent that you were made eat broccoli too, and you had an overbearing, controlling mother, she is a real bitch, she won’t stop controlling you now either, even though you are a grown up woman, and she is JUST like your husband, who is also a control freak, and you HATE being controlled, but what are the alternatives, really, go back to Plenty of Fish and internet dating?!

STOP your associations NOW Come back to the article, will you?!

See, what a seemingly innocent pattern of lights on and off will do?! None of this would have been possible without your Mind. Your mind is the part of you that thinks, associates, makes meaning of things, evaluates your actions, recalls your past, worries into the future, evokes further emotions and feelings, and it does it by…yes, you’re right. Interpreting and creating programs written in a code of chemical changes and electrical currents. Your mind is a creation of itself. It creates reality, YOUR reality, and it is the Universal interpreter, facilitator, mediator, actor and reactor between YOU and your reality. It is in your Mind that “out there” and “in here” meet and co exist. It is the place where the past, present and future coincide. Your mind is the product of your imagination and your imagination is the product of your mind.

The meaning of life is to make meaning out of your life. Contemplate that. You created your mind, and you are continuously creating your mind. Your mind created you and is continuously creating you. Therefore, if you want to change your reality, your mind, your self, your life, your job, your circumstances, your experience, you must start by changing your mind. Your mind however, even though it constantly changes, HATES change and resist with all its might. Why? Because it equates change with non existence.

Your Mind, paraphrases Descartes: I think this way, therefore I am. I am what I think I am.

Your mind is right, and your mind is wrong: You are this way, because you think this way. You are what or whom you are, because you think that is what or whom you are.

Change your thoughts, your emotions, change your mind, and you can change not only the way you are, but your entire reality, your life experience.

Who are you, really? Pay attention, be mindful of your mind, and you will find meaning to the question. Who or what way would you rather be? Pay attention, be mindful of your mind, and it will deliver not only the answer but the solution.

Mindful living, mindfulness is that simple and that complex: to change your life, all you need to do is to change your mind. To change your mind, you have to change the way you think. To change the way you think, you must be simultaneously aware of your thoughts and be able to be completely thoughtless. Without mindfulness, you are a slave to the thoughts, processes, associations, beliefs and limitations of your mind. Master your thoughts, to master your emotions and you will become Master of Your Mind.

Mind you later!

Your Mind: Part of You, But Not All Of You

According to the Buddha, all living beings -even those who have seemingly lost it- do have a "mind", yet theories both scientific and philosophical differ as to what the Mind really is. According to Wikipedia, the

"Mind (pronounced /ˈmaɪnd/) is the aspect of intellect and consciousness experienced as combinations of thought, perception, memory, emotion, will and imagination, including all unconscious cognitive processes. The term is often used to refer, by implication, to the thought processes of reason. Mind manifests itself subjectively as a stream of consciousness."

The Mind-Body-Consciousness-Soul debate (what are each, and how are they interconnected) has been going on for ages, and are much debated. From Aristotle to New Age Gurus, from Descartes to Quantum Physicians, philosophers, scientist, theologists, prophets, and every day people spent much mind power, but could not "make up their mind" about the nature and workings of the Mind. Why, they could not even prove that the MIND exists separately from the body and our consciousness.

To try to separate from the "self" and experience your Mind, try this simple exercise:

Set an alarm to go off after one minute. Sit, stand, or lie still, and for one minute, do nothing, and I mean, NOTHING but observe your thoughts, sensations, emotions and feelings. If you itch, scratch it. If you feel uncomfortable, change your position slightly, but try not to move, or do NOTHING (unless of course, it is an emergency) for sixty seconds.

Do not try not to think. Do not try not to feel. Do not try to focus on any specific feeling, sensation, ot thought. Do not try to focus on your breath, but if you feel like focusing on your breath, go ahead. Do not try not to judge. This is not a meditation, this is an exercise in experiencing your experience. ( Read the last part of this sentence a couple of times, it will make sense, I promise).

Ready? Go. Come back when you are finished.

........................No Cheating! Do not read the rest of this article until you've completed the exercise!

........................No Cheating!

OK, you're back. Now, try to recall what happened. Did you hear something? A dog barking, a cat mewing, a car going by? Did you think, this is stupid, I should go and feed the dog? Did you feel uncomfortable and restless? Did you feel coldness, or tingling, or any bodily sensations? Did any of these thoughts or sensations bring up memories, associations, feelings and thoughts? Did it go something like this:

"...the dog is barking. It must be hungry. I should go and feed the dog. Wait...I am out of dog food. I forgot to buy dog food. I ALWAYS forget to buy something. I must be getting Alzheimer's, or something....Great, now I have to go and get into my car and get some dog food, and there will be so many people at the store, I can't believe I am sitting here doing this stupid exercise, when I should be on my way to buy dog food...but it must be an important exercise and I should be able to sit for one minute, for God's sake, how hard it is to sit for one minute, anyone can do it, why do I find it so difficult, I must have Alzheimer's AND Attention Deficit Disorder...and my nose is itching...great...the alarm went off, I can stop now...."

Now, consider this: the "part of you" that was perceiving the certain vibrations that we like to interpret as a "noise" was your sensory system. The part that recognized this as being a noise, and a dog barking, was a combination of your perception, cognitive system, and memory. (If you never heard a dog barking, or if you never had a concept of what a dog is, you would not be able to translate the vibrations into sound, or identify them as a "dog barking"). The part of you that did all the planning was your cognition. The part of you that evoked emotions, "negative" or "positive" thoughts, was your mind. The part of you...are you ready for this?!

There was a "part of you" that sensed, a "part of you that interpreted", a part of you that thought, a "part of you that felt", a "part of you that planned", a "part of you that worried", a "part of you" that judged, yet, all of these "parts" were you, except.....ARE YOU READY FOR THIS?!

THE PART OF YOU, WHO OBSERVED ALL OF THIS WAS YOUR CONSCIOUSNESS. The Observer Observing YOU doing the Observations. The Experimenter Experiencing your Experience of the Experience.

Whew....thats deep, isn't?!

Mind you...(did you notice the clever pun?) Mind you, you are your mind, but you are not ONLY your mind. You've constructed your mind, and you constantly change your mind. Learn to master your mind, and your mind will be your greatest asset. Let your mind master you, and your mind will be your most formidable enemy.

You must learn to Master your mind, by first loosing it. Yeah. Loose Your Mind. Next time, when someone observes you doing something they don't approve, and ask:

Have you lost mind?!

Say proudly, and with full conviction: "Not yet, but I am working on it!"

How do you begin to loose your mind, to become "mindless" and therefore, free your mind from its limitations in order to awake it to its full powers?

You become mindless and selfless by learning how to be fully aware of and how to become fully mindful of your mind...(that's a mouthful).

Guess what? By completing the exercise, you have done the most important step. You are now aware, that your mind is not you. You are curious, what or whom that "other" is, the ONE, that observed you observing your observations.

You've became aware.

Congratulations. Mind you later!
